Most sororities have you pay a little over $1000 in dues per semester as a freshman because they give you an insane amount of presents (mostly clothing and various items with your sorority's letters on them so you can wear them around campus, but also a lot of handmade crafts from older sisters). While socializing is important for any developing person, from what I have read, the Greek life can lead to destroying lives instead of enhancing them; instead of forming meaningful relationships, it forms superficial ones based on social status and can be incredibly demeaning to women; it prioritizes partying and self destructive behaviour over community and education focus.
